First Aid for Icy Hot Burn

Immediate relief for Icy Hot burns or chemical burns from other Methyl Salicylate ointments such as Bengay, Bayer Muscle Joint Cream, ArthriCare Ultra Cream, and Tiger Balm:

To cool the burn, you’ll need olive oil and a few cotton balls or tissues.

  1. Gently wipe off excess icy hot with a kleenex
  2. Apply olive oil with a cotton ball / kleenex
  3. Wipe off with another kleenex
  4. THEN wash off with water

This stops the burn within minutes. I am not a doctor, just a mom who prayed* for help and is sharing the answer she got, because it really works. Let me know if it works for you too.

Note: no-mess formulas develop a tough “film” that can be hard to get through. You might try soap and water, or you might use a bit more oil and use it a bit longer. Let me know what works for you!

Edited to put relevant information at the top: seems this is a popular problem and this answer is too hard to find! Read on if you want the whole rambling story.

When Icy Hot gets TOO hot! How to take the burn out of Icy Hot

My five year old woke up crying with leg aches tonight. So I did what I always do for legaches: applied icy hot. Only this time it seems his skin was a bit sensitive. And icyhot doesn’t wash off so easily with water.

So anyway, my poor little guy went from whimpering to shrieking in a matter of minutes. Everyone in the house was awake now and he was in alot of pain. We couldn’t rinse off what was rubbed in. There were no ideas on the label for what to do (only a warning I’d never noticed: not for kids under 12!) So we prayed for relief and ideas to stop the burn, and then turned to the internet.

I phrased my google search many ways but only found horror stories of men who forgot to wash their hands or who learned the hard way not to … misuse… bengay. Not exactly the best reading material for a mom and her five year old (who incidentally suddenly seemed like TOO good a reader for his age – yikes!).

So I looked up the first active ingredient. Methyl Salicylate. I found medical writeups, but they were only about accidental ingestion. And for the layman like me, instructions to call poison control if it’s eaten.

I found no good advice for getting the stuff off though! An hour later, my kid had calmed down and fallen asleep. But I was wide awake and guessing with the frequency of his leg aches it won’t be the last time this sort of thing happened. So I decided to experiment with an idea that had popped into my head several times: olive oil.

To test the theory, I rubbed a little icy hot in a few fairly sensitive places. First I tried my inner elbow, which turns out isn’t all that sensitive, but I figured it would compare to the backs-of-knees that were burning on my son.

Then, cautiously remembering not to ingest it but knowing I wasn’t about to put it on anything more sensitive, I rubbed a little on my lips. I must admit, I figured if I couldn’t get rid of the burn right away, at least I might get that Angelina Jolie pout for a moment. That didn’t work, by the way. Don’t try it… the main ingredient is poisonous if you get too much of it. And my lips burned like crazy.

But the olive oil did work. Moments after the burn kicked in, I applied the olive oil and rinsed it off, and nipped the problem in the bud. The burning stopped immediately. Even the smell disappeared. I hope if you found this article it works just as well for you.

WHAT TO DO: Remove any excess ointment with a kleenex. Do not rub it in. Douse a cotton ball in olive oil and use that to cleanse the affected area gently. Then wash it off with water. Pat the skin dry.

IMPORTANT: IcyHot now makes a “no mess” roll on formula which leaves a film over the the active ingredients (I guess to keep it from getting on your clothes? ) If you’re burning with this formula or any other brand like it, you WILL need to wash off the film first with soap and water, and then use the olive oil trick to stop the burn. (Update: that isn’t completely stopping the burn for some people, though most say it helped somewhat. Avoid the roll-on stuff!)

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: I still plan on using icy hot; it’s a godsend on leg aches, and it even works wonders on my wrists if I abuse them with too many consecutive hours on design projects. But next time I’ll definitely do a patch test with a q-tip. If it doesn’t burn after 2 minutes, I’ll go ahead and rub it in.

NOTICE: I am not a doctor, just a desperate mom. This worked for me. I can’t guarantee it will work for you and can’t be liable. If you do decide to try it, please drop me a note on the contact form letting me know whether it did the trick. Hoping this helps someone. And typing always makes me tired, so now I’m going back to bed. Or not so much; he’s awake again with more leg aches. If you have tips for that please let me know!

  4. Dearest Velda, I used Icy hot many times before and found relief, however tonight I needed to use it on my shoulder and neck area by my ear. Within minutes not only did the product burn badly it reddened the skin area so bad it scared my husband. I am so thankful for your taking the time to do this blog and for your relationship with the higher source. The two of you have saved a lot of us, according to all those who have taken the time to reply to you, from excruciating pain, bless you and thank you. Susan

  5. Holy cow! Googled this in a fit after having a bad reaction to icy hot. I have used it a number of times before, but never had a severe burning sensation before. I hopped in the shower and that only exasperated the problem more. I started to panic, especially when I saw how a young girl passed away after using too much. I found this blog post, ran to our kitchen and started pouring on the olive oil. That was about 10 minutes ago, and now I can say I am comfortable enough to relax and fall asleep. No more burning, just a nice relaxing cool feeling on my leg. Thank you so much!!!

Bad idea there is no warning about wet skin and Lakota. I put some oil on at the end here and now I feel no warmth of burning at all. Thank you my personal angel.

  18. Hey! Just wanted to say I use icy hot alot on my stiff neck and shoulders. And I generally apply it liberally with no issues. Once in a while it gets hot but I embrace it because im in so much pain. ( I have a reverse cervical curve in my neck so my muscles get really tight) tonight however I put it on and fell asleep reading. Big mistake!! I woke am hour later and I was on fire. The first thing I did was wash with dawn dish soap n water. Then not getting the relief I wanted went to google. Yours was the first answer I went to. Since im a health nut I only cook with olive oil and I thought well if this doesnt work I wont be any worse off. This was twenty minutes ago and I am seriously feeling so much relief I just wanted to thank you! !!! Its not perfect. But its way beyond manageable!

  19. Hello, found this while (painfully) seeking relief from my welted icyhot spots. I have no olive oil, but I do have a suggestion for your son’s leg cramps. Not sure if anyone suggested this yet, but bananas help. My son used to get leg aches alot and they subsided quite a bit when we gave him a banana for a snack before bed. I believe it is the potassium that helps. Hope this helps you.

    Like

    1. Thanks Chris. I’d heard the potassium thing too. His cramps and mine are a bit different though. I think his feet (like mine) get really cold, especially at night, and that’s when they get achey. Keeping our feet warm with socks and a little exercise / massage before bed seems to help us.

I made the mistake of applying the roll on IcyHot to my knees and was fine for the first four or five hours. Then I try to go to bed and the really nasty burning everyone mentioned starts. I tried hand soap and water with a handtowel which was no help. I then googled and found you. I used olive oil and a towel then olive oil and a shower then calming wash and even conditioner. I thought I was doomed. I then remembered I had some aloe with litocaine (0.5%) and it turned it around almost completely. Thank you for the advice and maybe my trails will help someone else the oil doesn’t work for.

    Like

    1. Ah yeah, lidocaine is a pain killer so that would work too! But I don’t know what to do about that icyhot roll on if soap > water > olive oil > wipe it off doesn’t help. Seems super dangerous 😦

  21. I didn’t read the other posts before mine, so I hope this isn’t duplicate information. I used to get very bad leg cramps as a young child, and the doctor told my Mom to put me in bath water as hot as I could stand it. The hot water would take away the cramps almost immediately. If you try it with your child, start with warm water and gradually increase the temperature until it reaches the point where it’s not uncomfortable for him to sit in. I’m 40 and to this day I cannot be in cold water, not even in a swimming pool or my leg cramps come back immediately. Be careful that you aren’t placing your son in cool, or cold water, or even letting him linger in the bathtub until the water gets cold. I could tolerate very hot water as a child, but some children cannot.

Having said that, there are certain foods (which I’m sure you are aware of) that help with cramps such as bananas. My Grandmother had a cure that seems to work every time. Believe it or not, a teaspoon (a normal cereal spoon) of mustard takes away cramps. If you can get your son to take a teaspoon of mustard you may want to give it a shot! The mustard seems to work immediately for my family. Good luck!! Thank you very much for your tip! I appreciate it!!

    1. Thank you very much, Kendra! For all of the comments here I think yours is among the first to recommend a fix for the leg cramps. And I know what you mean: I still have to get in the hot tub after swimming, and I can’t walk on cool wet grass, etc, without getting terrible cramps in my ankles and shins. I wonder why some of us are made that way?

My daughter noticed, for what it’s worth, that while she never gets cramps, she does get sweaty feet. My son and I almost never do. Must be a circulation thing?

My husband had him in a cold shower within minutes. Shampoo and water were then applied without results. (No bodywash was to be found) We were googling and finding the olive oil remedy by minute 3. We immediately slathered all over his underarm and torso (the burning-ness had spread) and it worked like a charm. He practically skipped away without blinking an eye. Thank you!!!!

  34. From one single mother to another… Thank you so much.
I guess with all the different single mother “hats” I wear.. My body is starting to physically take its toll on me. (Rheumatoid arthritis, Carpal tunnel, insomnia, sleepless legs. etc) its especially bad when I do any kind of manual work and/or don’t get sleep (maybe that’s just my own conclusion since a moms sleep is valuable lol. but I do believe my lack of sleep wears me down.) Last night insomnia was bad so After laying in dark for hours all I could think of was all the work my DIY bathroom remodel still needs and as a single mom you probably know… if you don’t do it yourself, it just doesn’t get done . Haha, so I got up with my hands already swollen and continued where I’d left off earlier that evening. I’m paying for it now.. Stupid, stupid decision!
I’ve used icy hot for years and have never had a bad reaction. I live in Washington state…..icy hot just wasn’t working for my disease so A friend who is a grower here had been sending me info on the oil and the benefits it has for arthritis patients. I Finally agreed to try it topically. he mixed the marijuana oil with arthritis cream and little olive oil (lol). He rubbed it on me and after 5 minutes, I was in total shock….for the first time in years I was 100% pain free . So for a month I used the oil for all my pain including rubbing on my head for headache. I had no bad side effects and I was so happy that God blessed me with something HE made, my “miracle medicine”. I ran out fast so I Went and got a second batch of oil…the provider knew i was a new patient that only wanted low strength oil for medical topical application. Well…. It ended up being a way strong strength and I got stupidly stoned from using it just topically. I’ve had Numerous recommendations to try again with a lower strength or dosage.. The oil is known to cure cancer and helps arthritis to the point of no symptoms. I believe in this but I don’t like the stoned feeling I got and now I’m scared to try it again. Completely off topic I know but I promise there’s a method to my madness and boring novel here. But I am extremely tired so wonder if any go this will make since lol.
I Refuse to take pain meds and now I’m scared of my miracle oil ;( so desperate for relief from 2 days of no sleep and physical labor, i was hurting so thought I would try a couple other things along with the familiar icy hot although it usually does nothing for me……UNTIL TONIGHT! .lol ( but it can’t get any worse then the stoned incident. Right?!? WRONG! Pretty sure the burning sensation was way WORSE!
First I took a hot relaxing candlelit bath with calming, pain relieving Epsom salt. (Do u think that’s what caused that reaction) When I got out, right away I rubbed the icy hot (without oil or any additives) on my hands, neck, lower back and soon to find out…my face, too. I got in bed and when i laid down, I was so relaxed and feeling good after my therapeutic bath, clean sheets, new pjs, plus not much pain… Insomnia wouldn’t have been an issue tonight. Just as I had fallen asleep…BOOM! I jumped up faster than I knew I could move. I was in excruciating burning pain! I was starting to panic because it was completely unexpected and when you first wake up,,,, it takes a few minutes to even register whats going on. I started breaking out with a bright red rash that was swelling by the minute! in every spot I touched including neck and face. My neck is swelling up. I try to be strong around my kids. I’m sick, yes but if I complain about pain to my kids that would be a constant reminder. But this time…. No holding back. I was scared and I was crying pretty bad. It also made my back and hands and neck worse ???…. As I was looking this up, my younger son was waking up his big bro cause he was worried. If it wasn’t for you ….. I would’ve gone to hospital. How reyardded is that. Hi…. Icy hot is burning me. After all that,,,,, just wanted to say thanks. was going to have my son who doesn’t have a license yet, drive me to the ER! He’s hlad I’m ok but disappointed no driving tonight for him.

The olive oil didn’t neutralize the burn for me immediately, but over the course of ~10-15 minutes it’s dramatically reduced. The redness is also going away.

Also, regarding your son’s leg cramps – I know this was posted about 7 years ago, but if he still has them, have him try something called “Nuun Tablets”. I get leg cramps all the time as an adult, and in my case it’s a lack of electrolytes and potassium, but those things (which contain no sugar and aren’t terrible) really help me a lot. Might be useful for your son if he still gets cramps, is in to track and field or other sports and runs a lot, etc.

Again, thanks for the post. Really helpful.

I use icy hot everything!!!!! This was the first time I saw the rollerball product and was like “heck yeah” lemme get in on this goodness. Boy was I wrong!!!!! My neck and shoulder have been burning for about two hours now and being the failed cook that I am, have no olive oil or veg oil in my house. I am trying every trick that I know. My skin is beat red, and splotchy looking like it might blister and burning like you know what. The aloe vera gel helps a little bit, if I keep applying it about once a minute. So does a nice ice pack, until I take it off of course. I re-raided my pantry to see if I had ANYTHING that might help, even a little. Then I remembered that pam cooking spray is made with 100% veg oil. YESSSSS finally. so yep, I doused myself with it. I do have to say I am still hurting too much to go to sleep (its 2:49 am) but it did relieve it enough to where I dont think I need to go crying into my roomates room to make her take me to the ER. 🙂 and I can type this, so thats a good sign!

    1. Sorry Morgan. If you’ve got the roll-on kind, you need to get the filmy stuff off first with soap and water. Good luck.

    2. Hello, I used the IcyHot medicated no mess long lasting roll on.I used it on both sides of my neck my upper back and my whole right arm and I used a lot. After I applied the IcyHot I laid down because I was in a lot of pain. I usually use Bengay and I have never had a problem like this. About ten min after laying done I felt like I was on fire I tried to not think about it in hopes it would eventually calm down. I started turning red and my neck had welts and instead of calming down the pain went from a seven to off the charts. I could not talk to anyone because the pain was so bad I locked my bedroom door and instantly looked up cooling down the pain from IcyHot. I ran to get olive oil from my kitchen and carefully applied lots of it on the pain then I jumped in a cold shower left the water on my body then stood under my ceiling fan. I had to do this three times then I took two advil. It finally calmed it down to a three on a pain scale of 1-10. Be as calm as you can and you can be positive that it will help a lot. Please be careful not to rub your skin to hard when applying the olive oil. Apply it gently with soft tissues. I hope this helps! Faith

      1. Yikes! Welts and everything? The advil afterward is a good call when you’re that inflamed.

People might need to start calling the makers ( Chattem ) t about that roll-on stuff…

  50. Thanks for posting this! I had put some icy hot on my forearms since they were sore, then went out for a ride on my motorcycle (wearing my jacket, of course). By the time I got back home, my arms felt like they were on fire! I washed my arms off several times, but it still burned. After I found this, I tried the olive oil, and then soap and water, and phew… finally, relief.
